Class B SPDs are designed to withstand direct lightning strikes and other high-energy transients, and typically use a combination of surge suppression components, such as metal oxide varistors (MOVs), gas discharge tubes, and/or silicon avalanche diodes (SADs), to divert the excess voltage and current away from the protected equipment and into a ground wire or other path to the earth.
